The Chinese embassy in Malaysia has slammed Malaysian supporters of the ongoing Hong Kong protests as unable to differentiate "right from wrong".

According to Malaysian media Oriental Daily, the remarks were made by Chen Chen, the embassy's Minister Counsellor during an Aug. 15 speech in Kuala Lumpur for a ceremony commemorating the victims of World War II.

Malaysian supporters of HK protests don't know "true meaning of democracy"

Chen said Malaysian supporters of the protests in Hong Kong did not know the "true meaning of democracy".

And their support for the protests will do nothing to help the situation, he said.

It was important for Malaysians to clear their sights and look at the situation in Hong Kong objectively, he also mentioned in his speech.

Malaysians should support the HK authorities instead

Chen further said the Hong Kong government should be supported instead to restore law and order to the city.

This was because the protests had broken through the "boundaries of freedom of speech and peaceful assembly".

Unnamed foreign countries are looking to destabilise China

There were also foreign countries that purportedly wanted to use the chaos in Hong Kong as a springboard to threaten China's development and prosperity, the speech also mentioned.

Without naming these countries, Chen said they had instigated a "colour revolution" in the guise of spreading "freedom and democracy", so as to undermine the stability of other countries.

Chen added: "Such robber's logic and barbaric actions are the source of all evil in international politics, and the greatest public enemy to world peace and stability."

Echoing the Chinese ambassador to Malaysia

Chen's remarks echoed what was said on Aug. 14 by Bai Tian, the Chinese ambassador to Malaysia.

According to South China Morning Post, Bai had condemned the protests as “a series of illegal violent incidents” with “constant escalation of the violence and sabotage”.

Bai said: "I hope that Hong Kong citizens will choose wisely for their own future, and social stability will be restored soon."

"I expect that more and more Hong Kong citizens stand out to show their unwavering support to the SAR government, and together they will build, develop and safeguard their own hometown."

Who has supported the protesters in Malaysia?

According to Malaysiakini, Malaysian NGOs and political parties such as Bersih, Suaram and the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) have issued statements condemning the Hong Kong police's use of force on the protesters.

The DAP (Democratic Action Party) Youth Chief Howard Lee also issued a statement supporting the protesters, The Malaysian Insight reported.

Rallies have been held over the past three months by Malaysians voicing their support for the Hong Kong protests.
