Veteran S'pore actor Bai Yan passes away at 100

A life well-lived.

Bai Yan, one of the most revered veteran actors in the local entertainment industry has passed away.

According to Lianhe Zaobao, the veteran actor passed away on August 19, 2019.

He was 100.

Started acting for local television at 65

Born in Wuhan, China, in 1920, he was part of a performing troupe that came over to Singapore.

He only joined the television industry in 1985 when he was 65-years-old, with his debut TV appearance in Blossoms in the Sun (阳光蜜糖).

Bai would go on to act in memorable shows such as We Are Family (四代同堂) Son of Pulau Tekong (亚答籽), Five Foot Way (五脚基) and Pretty Faces (三面夏娃).

Celebrated his 100th birthday this year

When he received the Special Achievement Award in 1996, Bai humbly downplayed his contribution and even expressed that he felt ashamed to receive the award back then.

Earlier this year on May 5, he had celebrated his 100th birthday with around 130 Mediacorp artistes and crew at the Yummy Palace restaurant, more than 20 years after he had retired.

The celebration was organised by people from the acting industry to express their heartfelt appreciation for Bai.

Notable local actors were in attendance, such as Zoe Tay, Aileen Tan, Chen Xiu Huan, Hong Hui Fang, Zheng Ge Ping and Choo Hou Ren.
