The national daily published some ideas on how to live cheaply in Singapore and we were like:
Ideas such as walk around in Singapore (wow! why didn't we think of that?), eat a kosong prata (double wow!) and travel to Kovan for a 30 cents soya bean drink (think we will do just that!) were suggested.
Here's the list as compiled by the bros from Hardware Zone.
We think The Straits Times can do so much better.
If you want to live such a life as prescribed by The Straits Times, why not be enriched by the system instead? So here are 30 ways to really, really live cheaply in Singapore.
1. Don't go out
Painfully obvious but absolutely true.
2. Go for a long shower in the park
Nparks will foot the utilities bill. You just need to bring your own toiletries.
3. Go to the polyclinic... to watch TV
That is if you still watch TV. If not...
4. Head to the library for the air-con
Free. You don't even need to be a member.
5. Sign on RT (remedial training)
Build your muscles and get money at the same time? Why not?
6. Chiong IPPT
Or on the other hand, if you think the new IPPT system is a walk in the park, go for Gold ($500) or Silver ($300).
7. Loiter outside Starbucks for the free WIFI
Save on precious data plan! Best idea ever. Thank you, Starbucks!
8. Go fly a kite
No, really. It costs next to nothing.
9. Watch EPL at Community Clubs
Priced out by Singtel? It's okay, there are still community clubs. Feels like the good old kampung days when we had no television.
10. Walk to work and shower in the office
Seeking inspiration from Straits Times' idea of walking around Singapore idea, why not make it more productive?
11. Ask for free water at McDonald's
Free flow. Drink all you want.
12. Feel like a million dollar boss at branded boutiques
That is if you can hold on to your purse. But if you dress shabbily, it's quite likely no one will bother about serving you. Oh yeah.
13. Go for a real picnic
And feed on nothing but your feelings and love for the great outdoors.
14. Sweep all the serviettes in fast food restaurants
Yes.
15. At the same time, take all the chilli sauce you can
Don't think we can live without it.
16. Take the bus only when trains break down.
Free bus bridging services were offered on Monday and Tuesday at Bukit Panjang. With the frequency of train breakdowns, it is likely to be less than a month before you can get a free bus ride.
17. Spend your day at the cinema by just paying for one ticket.
Sneak off to other halls before the movie ends. Make sure to exit before the usher arrives. Or just tell the usher that you have diarrhoea and it's reaching the customs.
18. Try all the ice-cream at ice-cream parlours
"Can I try this, this, this, this and this?"
19. Charge your mobile devices at these MRT stations
Free juice at City Hall, Orchard, Tanjong Pagar, Kent Ridge and Ang Mo Kio.
20. Travel from one end of the island to the other with one of the longest bus journeys in Singapore
Try 61, 30 or 51.
21. Purchase a movie ticket and sleep through the show
Still cheaper than a hotel. Especially useful for guys when their wives/girlfriends are shopping.
22. Go for a swim by using ActiveSG membership
Free $100 credit. You get a free shower too.
23. Use the laptops at Apple Stores
Unlimited usage. No time limit.
24. Go shopping at SAF e-Marts...
Three cheers for SAF credits! Shop like a king at all e-Marts today.
25. And then sell your Goretex boots at the army market in Beach Road
Hurry, before the lease expires at the end of this year.
26. Partake in policy making by visiting the Parliament House
Then you can witness all the juicy bits that the mainstream media left out.
27. Watch real-life dramas unfold at the Courts
For a chance to meet Serina Wee, why not?
28. Go for free Vegetarian meals at Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery
The beehoon is delish.
29. Print your lecture notes using the office printer.
Because studying part time is tough.
30. Read Mothership
No irritating pay walls. Quality listicles. And we won't ask you to eat Ikea hotdogs, kosong prata and drink 30 cents soya bean drink every day. But if you die die have to read The Straits Times, head to 7 Eleven to browse Straits Times for free like a Mothership reader suggested.
