Let's embrace our unique pronunciations, shall we?

Don't worry, you will not be judged if you say any of these words 'wrongly'. The fact is as long as you are understandable by the majority of Singaporeans, it's a-ok.

Here are 10 words/terms that we mispronounce/misuse so often that it has come to be widely accepted:

1.

MRTFor those who have the surname Tee or Ti, try not to name your daughter Emma, ok?

2.

Library

The proper pronunciation is closer to Lie-bruh-ree. But our pronunciation is more efficient. Why waste the breath on one more syllable?

3.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Funny thing that most of us actually pronounce it correctly in our heads when we are trying to spell out the word. Works for February too.

4.

favourite

This one is so deeply ingrained that even Speak Good English Nazis have a hard time catching you mispronouncing it.

5.

medicine_animation2

Now, there are two proper ways to pronounce this word - mɛds(ə)n (med-suhn) or mɛdɪsɪn (med-i-sin). The way we pronounce it is a combination of both - meh-dee-suhn. Still understandable.

6.

tuition teacher

Unless you are taking a subject called 'Tuition' the proper term should be tutor. Beware of people proclaiming themselves to be 'English tuition teachers'.

7.

vegetable

So many ways to mispronounce this word. We love to pronounce words ending with -le with -er instead. Check out 11 words usually mangled by Singaporeans for more examples.

8.

lettuce

The act-atas folks will pronounce it as let-tus/letters. The correct pronounciation is closer to leh-tis. But who cares? It's just veggie-ter-ber.

9.

flour or fla

It's pronounced this way only in Singapore and Malaysia. So uniquely Singapore and truly Asia. It's pronounced closer to 'flower' everywhere else.

Our version is clearly superior because you won't mistakenly put flowers instead of flour into your carrot cake this way.

10.

wednesday

Why can't we pronounce words as they are spelt? Who says wens-day anyways? You don't say 'sat-day' for Saturday, right?

11.

singapore

If most Singaporeans pronounce it as sing-gah-pore, should we abandon the correct pronunciation of sing-uh-pore?

Anyway for nostalgia's sake:
