9 groups of people who could probably do with an SG50 bonus

You get a bonus, you get a bonus, everybody gets a bonus!

News of civil servants receiving a $500 SG50 bonus got many other groups of people asking where their own SG50 bonuses are.

Kudos to the NTUC folks for encouraging the government to do so in the first place.

While everyone cyber-brags about how much hard work they've put into their jobs and how deserving they are of an additional bonus, here are 9 groups of people who would probably benefit, at least in the form of recognition, from an SG50 bonus:

1. NSFs/NSMen

Once in our lives, two years of our time (plus many years of reservists and RT). If there is a group of Singaporeans who could do with a SG50 bonus outside of civil servants, it would be our boys in green.

Sure, it is our national duty to defend the country, but a little bonus cash to spend during book-out time wouldn't hurt anyone.

2. Housewives

They are the unsung heroines of Singapore's economy. They may be our mothers or our wives, and they keep Singapore fed and make sure we are well taken care of.

Quick go hug them now and say 'Thank you'!

3. Angry Internet Mob

These people live and breathe the Internet. They wake up every day finding something they can be upset with and take their rants online. That feat takes commitment and determination. This dedication should be rewarded.

The fact they will still find something about the bonus to complain about after receiving it should not be surprising.

4. Construction Workers

Between long hours, low pay and rancid low-quality meals, construction workers have one of the toughest jobs in Singapore.

Aside from literally building up the nation, they also save cats from drains and babies from ledges.

Nuff said?

5. Hawkers

I'm not sure about you, but I'm certainly going to show appreciation for this group of people who toil to keep meals delicious and under $5.

6. Volunteers

Volunteers for all sorts of causes help pick up the slack where society fails. Admit it, they make you feel less guilty about leaving less fortunate Singaporeans in the lurch.

Reward them once in a while.

7. Great Service Staff

Have you dealt with the Singaporean customer? They expect nothing less than perfection. When they do not get their way, their default response is to bang the nearest available table till they do.

And at the receiving end of this are service staff who are paid too little for the crap that they have to take. It takes a special breed of Zen masters to be able to render service with a sincere smile despite all that.

8. DBSS owners who have quality issues with their flats

It's not wrong to think that these DBSS owners have gotten a bad deal. They've essentially purchased a flat at a $100,000 - $250,000 premium with poor fixtures and fittings.

They can only look sadly at BTO owners with sweet-looking homes that cost less than $100,000 in renovations.

Someone give them a SG50 goodwill package quickly! Or they can read about how their lives are actually better staying in a DBSS.

9. SEA Games athletes who didn't win medals

While the media gave the spotlight almost exclusively on our athletes who brought us medals, we must not forget that to even compete in sports at such a level, the sacrifice is still considerable.

And all athletes who took part to represent in Singapore in the SEA Games should be given more than just a pat on their back for this.

And though they are not Singaporean, I think these two Filipino divers deserve some award for their indomitable spirit, sportsmanship and bringing some cheer to games spectators:

Anybody else you think deserves to get a nicer bonus this year?
