Ex-PAP MP David Ong sent a 'personal letter' apologising to Bukit Batok residents

"Personal reasons" (PM's letter); "Personal indiscretion" (Media); and "Serious error of judgement" (Letter to residents).

Poor Bukit Batok SMC residents. It feels like groundhog day for them.

In the lead-up to the Bukit Batok by-election (which political observers predicted would be held in May), these residents get interrupted by potential candidates Murali Pillai and Chee Soon Juan during their weekend brunches, their morning commute to work and even their evening time at home.

David Ong's letter of apology to residents

This week, they were spammed by their former PAP MP who "vanished" after March 12 and were reminded why they have to vote again on a non-public holiday this time.

Ong, of course, became a national man of mystery (his Facebook page is no longer available) after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong accepted and shared Ong's resignation letter in public.

Ong: "I am grateful also to all those who have stood by me during the recent difficulties, especially my wife and family"

In another scoop from Lianhe Zaobao, a reader of theirs informed the Chinese paper that Ong has written a letter of apology to the residents.

The reader shared the copy with Zaobao, which was written in both English and Mandarin.

In the report, Zaobao also confirmed with Ong that it was indeed a letter written by him.

This was what the letter said in full:

Dear Residents of Bukit Batok,

Please accept my sincerest apology for my resignation as your Member of Parliament.

I made a serious error of judgement in my personal life, leading to my resignation as MP. I am deeply sorry for having let you down, and for not being able to serve you for the full term that you elected me for.

I had publicly apologised to Bukit Batok residents in my letter of resignation on 12 March, and in my subsequent apologies through the media. However, I have also wanted to write this personal letter to each of you.

Once again, my dear residents, I want to thank you for your friendship and for giving me the privilege of serving you as your MP over the last 6 years. I am grateful also to all those who have stood by me during the recent difficulties, especially my wife and family.

I wish you and your family the very best!

Sincerely yours

David Ong

The end.
