What does this outcome mean?

WP

This election: 50.95%

Last election: 54.72%

PAP

This election: 49.05%

Last election: 45.28%

The dip in percentage might be due to the AHPETC saga and a general consensus that residents want to see better standards from their MPs, whether in Parliament or in dealing with municipal issues. However, the win still cements the fact that the WP Aljunied team has managed to secure their place in voters’ hearts and minds over the past four years.

He said, she said

Elections bring out the best – and worst – in people. Sometimes, it even turns them into bona fide quote machines. Here are some of the most epic anecdotes and speeches from both sides during the campaign.

Workers’ Party

Sylvia Lim, Sep. 9 rally:

As if we needed more examples of Sylvia’s golden retorts against the ruling party.

" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen">

“There are just 2.5 hours more before cooling off day starts, we are still waiting for the PAP to come back with a definitive clarification. Can they tell us which page out of the 25 pages we should look at? Where can we find the $1 million surplus that Charles Chong spoke about? Or could it be that the PAP has tried to mislead the public and damage AHPETC again? Will someone from the PAP be gentlemanly enough to tell us the facts? If the PAP has no good answers, it’s not the WP that is finished. It is the PAP that is finished. Liao! Finished!”

“The PAP seems uncomfortable with talking about happiness. Perhaps they are more familiar with sadness, since we see Lim Boon Heng and Lim Swee Say crying in public ever so often.”

Sylvia Lim, Sep. 8 rally:

" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen">

“Before the last GE…I was doing house visits at Kaki Bukit Division when I was bitten by a dog. We went on to win Aljunied GRC. About a month ago, while visiting homes at Walmer Drive, I was bitten again, by another dog. I have a good feeling about this GE.”

And the Queen of Wit constantly hit a home run with her sassy Instagram posts. Like the one that started #ReasonsToWin:

Low Thia Khiang, Sep. 5 rally:

King of smackdowns, Low pulled out the Punggol East SMC income and expenditure statement, then asked furiously (in Mandarin):

“I want the PAP to respond to the WP and residents of Punggol East: Where is the money??”

ltk where is the money

He was responding to DPM Teo Chee Hean’s claim that Punggol East had been “handed over (to WP) in good order, with surpluses”.

Low Thia Khiang, Sep. 3 rally:

Low shows off his multilingualism by producing noteworthy quotes even in English.

" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen">

“The past is our mirror, the present is our reflection and the future is in our hands to make.”

Pritam Singh, Sep. 5 rally:

Lauded as one of WP’s best speeches this election. Here is just one excerpt, but we encourage you to watch it in full.

" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen">

“Why do the CCC Chairmen become so indifferent to helping the community in a bigger way in opposition wards? It is not because they are stone-hearted. It is not because they are bad people. The reason is because installing a barrier-free access ramp at the void deck to serve the elderly and handicapped involves it being built on highly visible Town Council common property. Should such a facility be built, residents would realise that living in an opposition Town Council is actually no different from being in a PAP ward. And in the PAP’s world, this cannot be so, even if it means short-changing and punishing residents.”

Chen Show Mao, Sep. 2 rally:

Although Chen took a backseat to his colleagues from Aljunied GRC this election, he still had his moments.

For example, when he poked fun at ESM Goh Chok Tong’s rooster analogy that the WP were taking credit for the Government’s inclusive policies, much like a rooster that boasts its crowing causes the sun to rise.

" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen">

He also cheekily quoted ESM Goh’s advice to Aljunied voters that they should vote for people with qualities they want in a leader. So humour, much wit.

Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap, Sep. 4 rally:

Little has been said about the Aljunied GRC candidate, but his speech allowed voters a peek into his personal beliefs and values.

“Doing both counselling and politics at the same time, I started to realise after a while that these two areas, counselling and politics, compliments each other. For example, if a person faces life difficulties, counselling can make this individual feels empowered in resolving their personal issues.

However, if this same individual lives under a constant stressful living conditions which are caused by government policies such as overcrowding and lost of jobs due to influx of foreigners, financial burdens due to high cost of living and low as well as stagnated wages, no matter how much counselling will not be able to make individual to feel empowered as these external factors such as government policies, will not only curtail but also suppressed the process of self-empowerment.

Hence, doing both counselling and involving in political activism, I’m able to be more effectively change a person’s life.”

People’s Action Party

Chua Eng Leong, Sep. 4 rally:

Much shade was thrown at the Workers’ Party:

“At the PAP we are not a wayang party. We are an action party!”

Shamsul Kamar, September 4 rally:

" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen">

He tried appealing to the emotions of voters.

“Many (residents I spoke to) shared they have not been taken care of since they last voted in 2011… Visually, I saw the difference. Deeper down inside, some shared, especially those needing assistance… that they weren’t given support.”

“In 2011, the Workers’ Party came to you asking for your vote. You gave it to them. Segments of you gave it to them. They wanted your trust, some of us gave it to them. They wanted the voice of a first world parliament; some of us gave it to them.”

“In 2015 they’re asking you again. Will we give it to them? I say to all of you, look deep. Look into the eyes of your family members, your children, and ask yourself the hard questions, consider the hard truths.”

K Muralidharan Pillai, Sep. 4 rally:

Again, shade was thrown WP’s way:

" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen">

“I’m also going to tell you what my colleagues and I won’t do… (Gestures to a nearby block) If we get elected, we will not change the yellow and red signages for the car parks to signages having the PAP colours; we will not do that. Why? It’s a no-brainer, it’s simply a waste of money. There are 500 blocks in Aljunied. More than $600,000 for this exercise, it’s a waste of money.”

But he also kept it real during his unveiling:

“I don’t know how long my political career will be — it could be 10 days … I’m not fazed by the odds. I will fight this election with all my heart.”

Victor Lye, Sep. 4 rally:

We’ll give it to him, this one-liner packed quite a punch.

" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen">

“Bring us home to Aljunied.”

Yeo Guat Kwang, Sep. 4 rally:

Hitting home on an important issue in the national narrative, Yeo said he wants to form an economy that has a “Singaporean core”.

" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen">

“We want our next generation to be better than us. We will make sure they have good education programmes. But not only that, we will make sure they have good jobs, better jobs, and more jobs. If you vote me into Parliament, I will only talk about three things: jobs, jobs, jobs.”

He also called himself 小小杨儿, using his surname as a pun on the popular Chinese folk song 小小羊儿要回家.
