Parents beware: Escalators are death traps for unattended children

News of how a six-year-old girl in Kuala Lumpur has fallen too her death after playing on an escalator has been making its rounds over the weekend.

The incident occured last Friday. The child's mother was arguing with the father on the mobile phone and did not stop her two children from playing with the escalator handrail. She was less than 2 metres away from them. The six-year-old child was gripping the escalator handrail and was dragged through a gap between the escalator and banister before she fell down five storeys.

The mother may be facing charges of negligence.

CCTV footage of other children playing on escalators and falling off are commonly shared on YouTube as well. It is a grim reminder of how terrible things can happen if children are left unattended, even for a split second.
