The Singapore Land Authority wants public feedback on the possible uses for the land under viaducts, as well as, MRT and LRT tracks.
Currently, there is a Futsal facility under the Thomson flyover that 'has proven to been quite popular', according to the SLA. The public consultation will be held from 29 Apr to 20 May.
Members of the public can visit the SLA website and download the relevant feedback forms to give their suggestions.
Here's what we think will be popular suggestions:
1. Cycling track
Cyclists are a hazard on pedestrian pathways. They also slow road traffic down, especially during peak hours when they share the bus lanes with hulking buses.
One workaround is to create dedicated cycling lanes under MRT tracks which would allow cyclists to commute to work in a safer way.
2. Dog Run
There are not many dog runs in Singapore. The parks and beaches are shared spaces and many Singaporeans may be uncomfortable with dogs that are running about off-leash. Creating dog runs under viaducts will give our furry friends a much welcome space to run freely.
3. Hawker Centre
Singaporeans love food. The only thing they love more than good food is good food that is cheap. The only reason we suggest to build a hawker centre under a viaduct is the potentially lower rental rates which would allow hawkers to hone their crafts and provide good food without the worries of rental pressures.
4. Storage space
In space-starved Singapore, there is not enough room at home to store items that you do not use frequently but would still like to keep. The spaces under viaducts can be converted into cheap storage facilities. Geeks with huge toy collections rejoice!
5. Laser Tag Park
Viaducts provide good shade and that makes the space perfect for outdoor games like Laser Tag. Laser Tag never really took off in Singapore because it requires a lot of space. In land-scarce Singapore, lots of space means high rentals and that means wallet-unfriendly prices.
If the rental for the space under viaducts can be made wallet-friendly, then we may see the rise of Laser Tag. Guys won't have to wait till ATEC or other exercises to play pew pew pew.
We didn't suggest paintball because we know that a public servant somewhere in SLA/LTA will twitch under his eye whenever the underside of the viaduct gets stained by paint.
6. Picnic / BBQ pits
Shaded, outdoors, patches of grass, windy. Why not?
7. Basically any outdoor sport activity that would be made more awesome with some shade from the sun
The heat and humidity in Singapore takes the wind out of most people walking from point A to B. It makes playing sports doubly hard when people are working up buckets of sweat just warming up.
Having a venue that is shaded would make sports much more enjoyable and attractive. And this time, the shade has already been constructed. Nice.
