There has been some confusion recently over the changes to the Road Traffic Act that were passed into law on Sept 8, 2014.

Added to the act were a wider range of mobile devices, as well as heavier penalties for offenders.

It was previously reported that from Feb. 1, 2015, it will be illegal for drivers to hold any type of mobile device while driving. Previously, only calling or texting someone on a mobile phone was barred.

Then the question was: Is it an offence to use your phone while stationary at the traffic red?

Here's your confirmation: It is perfectly legal but not advisable.

On March 11, 2015, Commander of Traffic Police, Assistant Commissioner Sam Tee confirmed on air on Class 95's Muttons in the Morning show.

This is the exchange:

Muttons: If you're stuck at a traffic light, red light, cars are not moving, and I pick up my phone and I answer a WhatsApp message, is that an offence?

Assistant Commissioner Sam Tee: That's not an offence. The offence happens when the vehicle is in motion.

You're welcome.
