11 reasons why life was simpler with a Nokia 3310

We played Snake. It was the best mobile game. Ever.

When Apple announced yesterday that Singapore will not be among the first nine countries to get the Apple Watch once it's available on April 24, 2015, our hearts shattered like an iPhone screen.

Nursing a face implanted with cracked glass, we reminisced the time when we had something more enjoyable, something so durable. Something that made life so much simpler.

The Nokia 3310.

Here are 11 reasons why life was simpler with the unbreakable phone:

1. We only had one gamesnake

Ok. Maybe two.

Did we complain? Never. Did we enjoy the games? Absolutely.

No stupid requirements to spam your friends with game invites.

2. Nokia phones embodied our resilience

Unlike an iPhone, Nokia phones - like our spirits - were unbreakable. No reception? It's ok, we've got the snake. And nobody paid silly money to replace a supposedly unbreakable screen. $200? Please. We could get a brand new 3310.

But really the phone was invincible.

3. Nobody had time for silly battery packs

Because back then, charging a mobile phone was for the weak. It meant that you didn't plan your day perfectly like a normal human being would.

These days, the need for constant juice is so appalling that SMRT is providing charging points  at City Hall, Orchard, Tanjong Pagar, Kent Ridge and Ang Mo Kio MRT stations. #technologyadvancements

4. We found simple pleasures in customising ringtones

That was all we did. All day. Everyday. Everyone ended up having the freestyler ringtone though.

5. A text message from a special someone was cherished

You only had enough space to keep 20 messages. Nobody went ape s*** on nobody over some silly blue ticks.

6. We had fun times trying to dress up our 3310s.

Sometimes we even tried to match our dressing with our phones.

7. Keypads gave us something real

texting

We swore by its tactility. And how it was so comforting to actually touch a real button while texting, which was a real treat back in the day as we had to push buttons for at least 20 times for a "HOW R U?"

It was the days where you could type a message to someone with the phone in your pocket. Which touchscreen phone allows you to do that?

8. We had so much fun playing with secret codes

Remember how to find your IMEI number? *#06#

Remember how to boost your signal strength? *#3370#

9. Down with bluetooth/data plan. We've got the infrared

Want to challenge someone to a highly addictive game of snake? Infrared.

Want to send a ringtone you created? Infrared.

10. No Apple or Samsung debate

Everybody used a Nokia and we were all friends living in the Nokia universe. It certainly lived up to its tagline.

11. We didn't have to worry about bending the unbreakable

Those were the days where the phone could live in your pockets, forever.
