With everyone's Facebook/Twitter feed drowning in LKY-related content, we found those that cut through the glut.

1. Henry Kissinger, The Washington Post

Best line: "[H]e was a close personal friend, a fact that I consider one of the great blessings of my life. A world needing to distill order from incipient chaos will miss his leadership."

Why? The US secretary of state from 1973 to 1977, Kissinger is one of those global statesman who developed a close friendship with Lee. In fact, he wrote the foreword in Lee's From Third World To First autobiography. The article was also shared by Prime Minister Lee on his Facebook.

 

2. Former Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Facebook video

 

Best line: "I consider Mr Lee Kuan Yew a personal close friend, and I know he is a true friend of Indonesia".

Why? This is probably the first video tribute to Lee by a global leader.

 

3. "Mr Lee Kuan Yew's lawyer, Davinder Singh, remembers the man", The Straits Times

Best line: "It was then that I truly realised what this Chinese man meant to my Punjabi father who was not even born in Singapore."

Why? Top lawyer Davinder Singh is synonymous with Lee and lawsuits as he represented Lee in many of his controversial lawsuits against opposition politicians and foreign media outlets.

 

4. Lee Hsien Loong, Passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Prime Minister's Office

Best line: "I am grieved beyond words at the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew."

Why? As the elder son of Lee, PM Lee had to comfort the nation in grieve as he mourn the personal loss of his father.

 

5. The Economist, "The Wise man of the East" and "Commander of his stage"

Best line: "Lee Kuan Yew made Singapore a paragon of development; but authoritarians draw the wrong lessons from his success."

Why? The Economist does not have a byline but it is likely to be written by "Banyan" editor Simon Long. He has an in-depth understanding of Singapore, having been based here since August 2010. He was also the Economist's Asia Editor for four years.

 

6. Ex Foreign Minister George Yeo, Interview with Mothership.sg

Best line: "At St Paul’s Cathedral in London, there is a marble slab on the floor below the dome with words which said that for the monument of Sir Christopher Wren, ‘look all around you’. For Lee Kuan Yew’s most important contribution to Singapore, ‘look all around you’."

Why? The article probably won the social media yesterday, with over 60,000 page views within a day. Yeo was the "spokesperson" on Lee on television last night when Channel NewsAsia interviewed him on Lee's legacy.

 

7. Ex Minister S Dhanabalan, The Straits Times

Why? It has been a while since The Straits Times published anything that has "Catholic Church", "ISA" and "Marxist conspiracy" in a commentary.

Why? A black ribbon can be seen on both Google and PM Lee's Facebook page. Quite a number of Singaporeans have also changed their FB profile photo to the modified black ribbon version below.

9. "Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's guiding hand", International New York Times

Best line: "Mr Lee developed a distinctive Singaporean mechanism of political control, filing libel suits that sometimes drove his opponents into bankruptcy and doing with critics in the foreign press".

Why? It's on the front page of International New York Times! The writer, Seth Mydans, interviewed Lee in Sep. 2010, and wrote a well-circulated piece, as Lee reflected about his life and legacy.

 

10. "Lee Kuan Yew, the Leader Who Lasted", The Atlantic

Best line: "It was and is the best possible version of an authoritarian guided democracy."

Why? Well-respected Atlantic magazine has published a listicle! And it's by China expert James Fallows who was incidentally former President Jimmy Carter's chief speechwriter for two years.

And Lee's opinion on Carter? "He (Carter) recounted how, as a boy, the father gave him a penny or whatever to put into the pew box, and instead of putting one in, he took a penny out. So, the father then thrashed him. I said, why does the man do that? Having done it, how does telling the world that he was a petty thief help?”

11. "Singapore's Evolution", The Wall Street Journal

Best lines: "The popular portrayal of Lee as a pragmatist devoid of ideology is flawed. But he was astute and perceptive in critically evaluating any political or economic dogma that ran counter to his goals".

Why? Australian academic Garry Rodan is an expert on Singapore, having written several books and essays on Singapore politics since the 1990s. If you are a political science student, you should check out Transparency and Authoritarian Rule in Southeast Asia: Singapore and Malaysia, one of the most illuminating academic book about Singapore and Malaysia politics.
