As public interest in the case continues to run high, Chinese tabloid with a knack for the most scandalous scoops Lianhe Wanbao has spoken to the a 65-year-old (top left) and the other 69-year-old (top right) women accused of cheating a 70-year-old man of his life savings.

In two articles (here and here) published on Feb. 9, 2015, by the Chinese newspaper, the two elderly women gave their side of the story and revealing things to be slightly more convoluted than what was initially reported in The New Paper the day before.

Both women gave reasons that did not serve to exculpate them from wrongdoing or who was accountable for the ruse.

What is clear though is that both of them did not deny taking money from the elderly man, Tan Soy Klang.

It is just that they have different reasons for taking the money: Mainly, it is for a mahjong debt and to a government investment.

Here is what the two women claimed, translated from Chinese to English:

65-year-old "Ah Er": She claims she has a lot of debt from mahjong, up to $40,000.

Her husband even had to pawn jewellery to help repay the debt. She admitted she resorted to cheating Tan because she had run out of money. She got to know Tan through 69-yr-old "Ah Xiang".

She asked Tan to invest in a Government investment plan. She said she never told Tan that he owed the Government money.

She also claimed she only owed the elderly man $30,000 not $400,000.

69-year-old "Ah Xiang": She said she was a victim as well and was cheated up to $40,000. She said she was Tan's friend for over 50 years and he had given her money at first to help her.

She admitted to taking Tan's money for many years, but said all the money went to "Ah Er", the 65-year-old accomplice.
