Quirky SMRT train announcer identified, but no plans for 23-year-old Train Captain to start singing yet

Announcements with a personal touch were partly spontaneous.

The SMRT train announcer who has received massive praise from the public for his quirky announcement has been identified by his employer.

Tan Ming Hui is the SMRT Train Captain responsible for a series of train announcements that deviate from standard versions of requesting passengers to mind the gap.

However, the 23-year-old is not in any form of trouble as he is encouraged by his employer to make more light-hearted announcements.

Speaking to the media at Jurong East station on Dec. 10, 2014, Tan explained that part of the spontaneity was planned though: He had to run the idea past his superiors first, before they decided it was a good idea and that there could be more variety with an added personal touch.

And what passengers hear when they travel on trains operated by Tan was the result of a bit of trial and error.

For example, there are different announcements for different days for every day of the week.

Tan also explained that his version of train announcements began as early as March this year, but they were simpler then and not as long or as varied as the one-minute version that was recorded earlier this month and posted online. Most of them initially ran along the lines of, "Please remember to take your belongings and watch your step when you leave the train."

Tan also said that the idea for his announcements stemmed from a training course he underwent under SMRT:

"Actually it stems from one of the course I attended that all train captains have to go through, it is a course of service excellence."

"But the main point which is brought forth to this announcements is what the company always teach, which is to build trust and bring smiles everyday to everyone who travels with us."

"With that and also to couple with the company's framework of SRCC, which we call the Safety, Reliability, Care and Comfort."

"As a train captain, I believe I've already provided these Safety, Reliability and Comfort aspect of the service through operating my trains. But the Care part I can do a little bit more for the passengers and this is how the announcements came about. Because when passengers alight from the trains, there is no one reminding them to remember to take their belongings with them as well as to watch their step."

Not only has his efforts been recognised online, he has personally received encouragement and praise from the public for going the extra mile.

Tan said: "From time to time when I was operating the train, passengers stepping out will give a thumbs up or saying that it is a good job."

He also said he won't be singing anytime soon -- or at least not before getting clearance: "Mmm singing? Maybe yes, maybe not. That one I would have to discuss with my superior first."
