Amoy Street Food Centre closing temporarily, undergoing renovation from Dec. 1, 2014 to Feb. 28, 2015

Let's hope food prices will not increase too much after that.

Here's some awful news: Amoy Street Food Centre that feeds the hungry masses in the Central Business District cheaply every weekday will be closed for three months for renovations from Dec. 1, 2014 to Feb. 28, 2015, according to I-S Magazine Online.

The last time the two-storey hawker centre was renovated was 11 years ago in February 2003, where it was upgraded to its current configuration with a 1000-seat capacity.

With the temporary closure of Amoy, the closest food place that serves food just as cheap would be Maxwell Food Centre just down the road.

However, the main concern with food centre renovations is that they take close to forever to complete.

Lau Pa Sat, the 120-year-old market-turned-food centre, reopened on June 30, 2014 after a $4 million facelift that lasted nine months.

The original timeline for renovations was initially scheduled to last only two months.

Worse, prices of food were increased by 10 percent or more as the average stall rental shot up from $3,700 to $4,700 a month.

Let's hope the same will not happen to Amoy Street Food Centre.
