A Singaporean couple, Reuben and Joyce, have embarked on an epic year-long journey around the world.

They started their travel on March 7, 2014, by heading off to Argentina first.

Their plan is to travel South America, Europe, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Nepal, China, Taiwan and Vietnam, before making their way back to Singapore.

Currently, five months and one week into their trip, they have made it into Turkey.

Their travel experience is chronicled in their blog, which also answers some common queries about why they are travelling around the world, explained in their very informative Frequently Asked Questions segment.

Here is one such candid response explaining why:

To be very honest, our Confucian upbringing really does leave us feeling guilty for doing this Round-The-World trip. But we had a choice, go do this now while we are still young, healthy and without the responsibility of kids, or lead the template Singaporean life and wait till.. I don’t know when?

We are/were happy individuals, both with great jobs and colleagues we loved, and luckily still have great friends, family. Our careers were going well, but yet, we just KNEW in our guts that we had to do it now, not because we hated our lives, but because we wanted to make this dream trip a reality. While we can afford to. We didn’t want to be 80 and regret our decision to not go when we had the chance.

The pair also revealed that they have been friends for three years and dated for three months before buying tickets for their trip.

So far, they only had to make one drastic change to their travel plans, which is to avoid Israel as there is an ongoing conflict.

In an email reply to Mothership.sg queries, Reuben wrote:

"Yes, we managed to travel to all except Israel. Due to the war now, we cancelled our trip to Israel, skipping Israel altogether.

There wasn't a drastic change yet until Israel, other than that we usually have a rough plan on the cities we want to visit. Occasionally, we do add a few cities along the way because we heard from other travellers that the cities is nice. Copacabana, Bolivia is one of them."

And to savour this once-in-a-lifetime experience, they have set aside approximately S$50,000 in total, or roughly, S$68 per person per day.

They also reveal that both of them do freelance work while they travel and had to save up for this trip. Reuben and Joyce hold New Economy jobs -- Reuben is a programmer and Joyce is a community manager for a Singaporean start-up accelerator. Which means they can get work done offsite.

Some useful tips they've provided include staying at Airbnb accommodation, such as this room in Berlin:

And even staying in hostels that are value for money. They also advise staying longer at one place to cut down on travelling costs.
