Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong delivered his annual National Day Message this year at the Alexandra Park Connector.
Here are the 5 main points:
1. Greater peace of mind for retirement - touching on the Pioneer Generation Package, MediShield Life and tweaks to CPF, PM Lee noted that safety nets have been put in place for Singaporeans so they do not have to worry about their silver years. The government is looking at ways of unlocking value in retirees' HDB flats in a prudent and sustainable way, as well as looking at ways to improve CPF. More details will be revealed at his National Day Rally Speech.
2. Helping ITE and Polytechnic grads chase dreams - the ASPIRE (Applied Study in Polytechnics and ITE Review) committee will find ways to help ITE and Polytechnic grads to master their specialised skills and earn advanced qualifications while they work.
3. Economic growth - PM Lee shared that Singapore's growth forecast for the second half of the year to be between 2.5 - 3.5%. He called for the growth to be sustained for a decade in order to improve the lives of Singaporeans.
4. Strengthening bonds - Singaporeans "must deepen our shared identity, and the values we hold dear. Singapore will only succeed if we stand together as one united people."
5. SG50 and beyond - Singaporeans have contributed many ideas to how they would like to celebrate Singapore's 50th birthday. Moving beyond that, there are no limits to what Singapore can achieve and it depends on what Singaporeans make of it.
