8 S'porean politicians who should have their own theme songs

Someone should play these songs when they enter parliament, a la WWE.

1. Seng Han Thong - Alicia Keys: “Girl On Fire”

Lyrics: That Member of Parliament girl is on fire

" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Why the song? We could not help but notice that MP Seng Han Thong was set on fire in 2009. It also seems that he was punched by a taxi driver back in 2006. The guy just can’t catch a break, can he? In all seriousness, Mr Seng, you ought to take better care of yourself.

2. Chan Chun Sing - 2PM: “Hands Up”

Lyrics: Now, put your hands up, put your hands up put, put, put, put, put

" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Why the song? Early on in his political career when Chan Chun Sing was making a speech, he famously asked audience members to kee chiu (which is Hokkien for "raise your hands"). Unfortunately, (or fortunately, depending on how you see it), the name has sort of stuck over the years and he is now fondly known as the kee chiu minister.

3. Low Thia Khiang - Rihanna: “Shut Up & Drive”

Lyrics: I’ve been looking for a driver who’s qualified, so if you think you are the one step into my ride...shut up and drive

" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Why the song? During the 2011 General Elections, WP’s Low Thia Khiang thought up his much quoted “co-driver” analogy, which likened to Singapore being a car, and the PAP being it’s main driver. He even went as far as to say he might slap the driver of a car under special circumstances. Well, I know I won’t be getting into a car with him anytime soon.

4. Tony Tan - MC Hammer: “Can’t Touch This”

Lyrics: You can’t touch this.

" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Why the song? This infamous video of President Tony Tan giving a "dead-fish" handshake made rounds during the 2011 presidential elections. In his defence, the possibility does exist that he is allergic to seafood, which means he can’t touch this.

5. Chiam See Tong - Gloria Gaynor: “I Will Survive”

Lyrics: “I will survive.”

" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Why the song? Chiam See Tong, long time stalwart of Potong Pasir, against unfathomable odds, held stubbornly on to Potong Pasir SMC for 20 years from 1984 to 2011. His name also roughly translates to "surviving for the moment" in dialect. Unfortunately for Chiam, this moment came to pass in the last general elections, when he lost Potong Pasir to the PAP.

6. Chee Soon Juan - Chumbawamba: “Tubthumping”

Lyrics: “I get knocked down, get up again, you’re never gonna keep me down.”

" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Why the song?  A long time critic of the PAP, Chee Soon Juan is the opposition’s poster boy for never giving up. The leader of the Singapore Democratic Party has been sued for defamation numerous times, gone on a hunger strike, imprisoned and declared bankrupt. He failed to run for the 2011 General Elections because he was then still a undischarged bankrupt. Neither did he run for the 2006 elections.

Nevertheless, "discouraged" is clearly not in this man’s dictionary. He has stated that he intends to run for the 2016 elections.

"I look forward to standing for elections in 2016," Chee Soon Juan, 50, the Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), told AFP.

Can't say I feel as excited as him. But good luck anyway.

7. Baey Yam Keng - The Chainsmokers “Selfie”

Lyrics: "Let me take a selfie"

" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Why the song? Baey Yam Keng is without a doubt the most fashionable politician in parliament at the moment, famous for his Instagram selfies. Most of them are of him working out, attending events and in bodycon-ish clothes. We’re still waiting for a #parliament selfie. Patience. Our time will come.

8. Lee Kuan Yew - DJ Khaled: “All I do is win”

Lyrics: All I do is win, win, win, no matter what.

" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Why the song? He’s won numerous defamation lawsuits, is Singapore’s top-selling author and a respected politician worldwide. But what matters most is that he is undefeated in Tanjong Pagar GRC since the inception of Singapore. Indeed, all LKY does is win win win win win, no matter what.

Hurhur.
