They couldn't issue any clarifications on July 13 when the rumour spread probably because civil servants don't work Sundays.

The President's Office on Monday, July 14, 2014, confirmed that today -- the day of the World Cup final between Germany and Argentina -- is not a public holiday in Singapore.

This was in response to a a letter circulating online, which claimed that President Tony Tan Keng Yam had declared a public holiday on the day of the World Cup Final.

According to the letter with a convincing masthead, the public holiday was meant to allow Singaporeans to have a chance to watch the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final between Germany and Argentina, which was broadcast "live" at 3am Singapore time.

The public holiday was apparently approved by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and government offices would be closed on Monday, the letter said.

However, the President's Office has since said in a statement:

"It has come to our attention that there is a letter circulating on mobile and online platforms in the name of President Tony Tan Keng Yam declaring today (July 14) a public holiday. We would like to clarify that the President’s Office did not issue such a letter."

"Public holidays are announced by the Ministry of Manpower and can be found on their website here."

It is not known if this has caused or deterred civil servants from going to the doctor's to acquire medical certificates.
