Good news to all who dread taking the annual IPPT (Individual Physical Proficiency Test) because they can't jump and can't pull: Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen has announced that the new IPPT criteria has been trimmed from five to three stations only.
These three stations are: Sit-ups, push-ups and 2.4km run.
There will also be more age bands and a new scoring system implemented, although no details are available yet.
What is known for sure: There will not be a pass mark for each station. Instead, points from each station can be used to compensate for other stations and the total points accumulated from the three stations will determine a pass or fail.
In this way, soldiers can make up through doing more sit-ups, if they are weak in push-ups and running, but there's a limit to how much they can compensate.
The three-station test is similar in scope to what the United States army uses: Push-ups for two minutes, sit-ups for two minutes and a timed 3.2 km run.
Those in their 20s undergoing the US army’s test ought to be able to do 60 to 70 reps for push-ups and sit-ups in two minutes and complete the 3.2 km run in 20 minutes or so.
