The above photo was published on the front page of The Straits Times on May 16, 2014, some two days after anti-China protests erupted across Vietnam after China deployed an oil rig in early May near the Paracel Islands claimed by Beijing and Hanoi.

The photo had the following caption:

A photo taken yesterday showing some 500 Chinese workers from the Baoyuan shoe factory in Ho Chi Minh City trapped inside their dormitory, hiding from angry Vietnamese protesters. The mob tried to break down the doors several times, leaving some of the workers slightly injured. PHOTO: COURTESY OF ZHANG HUSHENG

This turned out to be awfully inaccurate.

The next day, ST ran a correction and an apology on page 4 that read:

OUR Page 1 picture caption yesterday accompanying the report, "Order restored, says Vietnam", stated that the people in the picture were Chinese workers from the Baoyuan shoe factory in Ho Chi Minh City. They were in fact Vietnamese employees of a shoe factory who were ill from suspected water poisoning.

We are sorry for the errors.
