Step 1: Go to this map: https://www.mapbox.com/labs/twitter-gnip/brands/#13/1.3606/103.8438
It was created by Mapbox, which markets beautiful mapping software.
The global map shows the locations of 280 million individual posts on Twitter and the types of devices that send out those tweets.
And you can zoom in on Singapore.
Step 2: Notice the density of iPhone users spread around Singapore in red.
Andriod users are in green, still in the minority, but not doing too badly.
Blackberry users are an endangered species in Singapore and are clustered in the southern Central Business District area. (As pointed out by the blue arrow.)
Business Insider's deputy editor, Jim Edwards, wrote about this divide between different types of smartphone users in America, and concluded: The rich, it seems, use iPhones while the poor tweet from Androids.
But how can it be? Surely Android users use Android phones in Singapore not because they are poorer?
Step 3: Lo and behold, when you scroll away from Singapore, you'd notice that to the north, Malaysia has a dearth of iPhone users. (As pointed out by the blue arrow below.)
In fact, there is a dearth of Twitter and/ or iPhone users in Malaysia.
The conclusion?
Well, seems like it is a rather controversial one.
But we'll leave it up to you to decide if Singaporeans' smartphone-addled existence really has something to do with our country's economic prowess.
