MDA insists it is up to the public to prove STOMP is against public interest

What if Singaporeans petitioned against MDA too? That'd be awkward.

The Media Development Authority has officially responded to the online petition -- which has accumulated more than 22,000 signatures -- to shut down STOMP, a voyeurism site by The Straits Times that also knowingly peddles falsehoods.

In a Facebook post on April 11, 2014, MDA issued the following statement:

Since the online petition began in earnest on April 6, 2014, Singapore Press Holdings has come out once to issue a short statement denying any wrongdoing on STOMP's part.

An anonymous SPH spokesperson has justified STOMP's existence by saying the site has a "large base of supporters".

The faceless SPH spokesperson told Marketing on April 8: “We are aware that as a citizen journalism website, Stomp has its detractors. But we also have a large base of supporters who visit us regularly. We also deny the accusations in the petition.”

The petition had said that STOMP unfairly picks on NSFs and NSmen, claims that have been substantiated with photographic proof.

STOMP lacks credible defenders

So far, no known SPH or ST spokesperson, who is willing to be named and identified, has come out to publicly defend STOMP with a straight face.

Mothership.sg had sought SPH Digital Media Editor, Felix Soh, for comments via phone and email on April 8, but there has been no word from him.

Moreover, the online petition came in the wake of anti-harassment laws passed in mid-March, where cyber-bullying and stalking has become a serious matter in Singapore.

Meanwhile, some Singaporeans have started to chronicle just how Singapore society as we know it is unravelling.
