If any one remembers, SingTel's subscription price for 64 matches of the 2010 World Cup costs existing subscribers $70.52.
According to then-SingTel chief of content and media services Edward Ying, subscribers would "pay about a dollar a game to watch in the comfort of their homes ... I think they can afford it. It is less than a cup of coffee.”
Fast forward four years on. SingTel has once again signed a deal with Fifa to bring the 2014 World Cup in Brazil to Singaporeans. Except this time, one match costs almost two cups of coffee.
Subscription prices for the 64 matches would set subscribers back $112.35 or approximately $1.75 a match.
In a media statement, SingTel noted that "customers who sign up for or extend their Gold Pack or mio Stadium+ contracts (on both pay TV platforms) for 24 months will enjoy the matches for free."
Currently, mio Stadium+ costs $59.90 per month while Gold Pack runs up to $69.90 per month.
SingTel also noted that it "is also working with Community Clubs island-wide to explore screening selected matches, just as it did for the BPL season."
