As an errant employer who is all heartless and a scourge to society, do you spend nights awake wondering how on earth you can underpay and overwork the foreign workers you employ?
Well, wonder and worry no more.
The antics of the exploitative have been chronicled for posterity in this article, which reports that some employers in Singapore have managed to get away with paying as little as $1.50 an hour to foreign workers. Legally.
Here is a list to guide you along the path of exploitation, since to hell with your conscience already.
1. Foreign workers are usually promised a decent salary (e.g. $800 a month) during negotiations in their home country to entice them to up sticks and leave.
Pay them $280 a month when they get to Singapore anyway. Classic bait and switch.
2. As a cold, heartless employer, you must never issue pay slips as this will give the foreign workers proof of how little they are getting. This is the first step of preventing them from reporting you and your heartlessness to the authorities.
Hence, this practice of issuing payslips must be put off for as long as possible.
3. Ensure foreign workers have borrowed a lot of money to pay for recruitment fees to agents who ship them over to Singapore to find work.
This debt will weigh heavily on their wearied hearts and prevent them from wanting to bring up the issue of being underpaid, as they will risk getting repatriated and will be in bigger trouble.
4. Refuse to perform electronic fund transfers of salary payment.
Because "Electronic" is a dirty word. It translates directly to "traceable evidence".
5. Make it known that as an employer, you can unilaterally on a whim cancel the work permit and send the worker home once the complaint is resolved and dues are paid.
Calmly make it known that this is not a threat. This is a fact.
6. On pay day, stuff wads of cash with various denominations into envelopes and hand them out all at once to the workers.
And then make a run for it.
The workers cannot complain on the spot because by the time they count and tabulate the amount realising they've been shortchanged, you're out of there.
