SMRT Ltd (Feedback), the undisputed mega troll of Singapore, has just gatecrashed the newly launched Singapore Advocacy Award (SAA).
Before we proceed, a little background story: On Dec. 6, a group of civil society activists came up with the SAA to recognise their own contributions to society. (Which is sort of like the equivalent of liking your own status on Facebook. Anyways...)
SMRT Ltd (Feedback), then decided to nominate themselves for the SAA with the help of the Internet, as they have been (justifiably) doing some important work in the social media scene ever since the late 2011.
That was when SMRT Ltd (Feedback) set up their Facebook page overnight to capitalise on the first major train break down in Singapore, and ever since then -- week in, week out -- have been teaching Singaporeans how to embrace our own myopic and "one-eyed dragon” view of race and gender relations, among plenty of other things.
However, SMRT Ltd (Feedback)'s nomination for the SAA might only come to pass if they help the newly-launched SAA Facebook page to receive at least 1,000 Likes -- all in the name of making a change, democracy and stuff.
Source: Singapore Advocacy Awards FB page is now 165 fans away from keeping a promise it will find hard to fulfill (as of Jan. 8, 7am).
Regardless, here are 10 very good reasons why SMRT Ltd (Feedback) deserves a medal for their brand of advocacy:
1. Keep the Internet safe by weeding out malicious trolls.
SMRT Ltd (Feedback) has been uniting everyday men and women of the street by hunting down Heather Chua, a fictitious character on Facebook, who has been, as of late, putting all Singaporeans down.
2. Improve gender relations.
They demonstrate how men and women can get along if everyone was more flirty.
3. Display healthy disrespect towards authority to dismantle existing power relations structure.
[Editor's note: Both Singapore Police Force and PM Lee Hsien Loong did not follow SMRT (Feedback) on Twitter.]
4. Encourage fact-checking among populace.
5. Educate corporations and front-facing organisations about the need to be responsive to feedback.
6. Espouse the value of no-nonsense punditry with published results/ track records.
What kind of sorcery is this?
7. Inculcate courteous behaviour among youngsters.
8. Help narrow the class divide.
9. Prepare Singaporeans for knowledge-based society.
10. Display fairness and neutrality regardless of race and creed.
Insults Chinese, Malay, Indians, Eurasians and foreigners.
Wins 57,000 fans.
