Everything you need to know about the Committee of Inquiry on Little India riot in 60 seconds

The COI findings will be made public within six months.

Home Affairs Minister and Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Teo Chee Hean has appointed a four-member Committee of Inquiry to look into the riot at Little India on Sunday.

The COI will be headed by former Supreme Court Judge, G. Pannir Selvam.

The other three committee members are former Commissioner of Police, Tee Tua Ba, former president of the National Trades Union Congress,  John De Payva and chairman of the West Coast Citizens' Consultative Committee Andrew Chua.

A summary of the COI appointment below:

1) COI's main terms of reference:

a.          Establish the factors & circumstances that led to the riot in Little India.

b.          Establish how the riot unfolded and how the response forces managed the incident.

c.          Consider whether current measures to manage such incidents in areas where foreign workers congregate are adequate, and recommend any further measures to improve their management and reduce the risk of such incidents.

 

2) COI's report: Provide a report of its proceedings, findings and recommendations to the Minister for Home Affairs within six months.

3) How the committee was chosen: DPM Teo said that the committee was chosen because they are experienced with the law, understand workers' relations and appreciate security requirements.
