Update (17 May, 2014): Peter Lim has been confirmed as the new owner of Valencia FC, after 22 trustees of Valencia Foundation committee voted unanimously in his favour. He pledged $720 million to the club.
When Remisier King Peter Lim offered Spanish football club Valencia enough money to bump up a country’s GDP, nobody batted an eyelid.
This is because, Lim, a Manchester United fan, had almost bought Liverpool Football Club back in 2010 and Atletico Madrid briefly appeared on his radar earlier this year.
In one fell swoop, Lim will sink 306 million euros (S$530 million) to wipe out Valencia Football Club’s debt and promised another 40 million euros (S$70 million) to buy new players in the upcoming January transfer window.
To borrow a local phrase to describe Valencia’s elation: “Huat ah!”
Given his net worth of US$2.05 billion (according to Forbes), and the fact that there are many other things to splurge on, here are eight things the 60-year-old astute investor could consider buying to benefit Singaporeans.
1. Set up a new taxi company to benefit Singapore commuters
He could name this the Rainy Cab Company, which means his fleet of taxis will only operate during days with heavy rainfall. This will ensure a monopoly during rainy days when most cabs go into hiding.
2. Invest in Rediffusion

For its amazing return from the grave, Rediffusion deserves a punt. The first radio station in Singapore faced a certain end in 2012 but saw a revival a few months later after its ex-DJ Eeva Chang bought the station. She helped reinvent the 64-year-old station with 21st century innovations such as apps and podcasts. Time for more investment to engage the millennials.
3. Buy Hougang United

For a football fan, a local football club is a shoo-in on his shopping list. And Hougang United might be the best bet. It isn’t the best team in Singapore but it has the foundation of a successful football club, the 12th man in the form of Hools (Hougang Only One Love), which consists of the most raucous, fervent supporters in the S-league. And with his connection to elite footballers, perhaps a Rio Ferdinand or Steven Gerrard type could grace the Hougang stadium?
4. Set up many Books Actually

A supporter of home grown poetry and books, Books Actually has come a long way since its inception in 2005 and is living proof that local literature has a market. Now, the owners could do with some cash injection due to the rising rental costs in Yong Siak Street where the shop is located.
5. Purchase the naming rights of Sports Hub from OCBC and co-name it with Mr Peh.

Ok, so he’s up against a bank here but bankers are a pragmatic bunch; give them an offer they cannot refuse and they might surrender their S$50 million 15-year naming rights deal of the various facilities within Singapore Sports Hub, except the iconic National Stadium and Singapore Indoor Stadium.
6. Create a new MRT line

With so many new train lines sprouting all over the island (Downtown Line 1 opened on 22 December), it wouldn’t hurt to invest in a new line, which could stretch from Pasir Ris to Joo Koon and then across the Second Link to his two major projects (a medical hub and a race track) located in Johor. Let’s call this the Remiser King Line.
7. Pay Singaporeans to visit the museums

The museums have enjoyed a higher number of visitors as Singaporeans and permanent residents (PR) can visit them for free. He can go one step further in educating Singaporeans about our history and culture by paying them to visit the museums.
8. Bring back A&W

This will be the ultimate service he can do for many young adults who miss the scent and texture of curly fries, waffles, coney dogs and root beer floats.
If Facebook fans is a good barometer for Singaporeans' enthusiasm and support, then we have a winner here.
