Outpouring of goodwill by scores of corporations in S'pore to help Typhoon Haiyan victims

Humanitarian effort done right.

It has been nearly a week since Typhoon Haiyan struck and relief efforts are underway.

The Singapore Red Cross said about 70 corporations and organisations have contacted it to help in fund-raising efforts.

Local aid agency, Mercy Relief, has received a dozen more offers of help on ways to raise funds.

Here are 11 commendable efforts by corporations in Singapore:

1. Credit Suisse staff in Singapore and Asia Pacific are holding a donation drive. The bank has pledged US$400,000 in donations.

2. Property developer Oxley Holdings will match public donations to the Singapore Red Cross dollar for dollar, up to $1 million.

3. ANZ and HSBC are asking staff for donations.

4. DBS Bank customers have given some $225,000 via ATMs and websites.

5. OCBC customers have given $36,400.

6. Isetan Singapore, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Cold Storage, Giant and Guardian will put donation cans at their outlets.

7. BreadTalk will launch two buns - Pork Sisig and Fish Sisig ($2.50 each) – to help raise funds for the victims. All proceeds from the sale of these 2 buns will go to the “Red Cross Haiyan Relief” fund.

8. TigerAir Singapore is sponsoring air tickets to fly medical and emergency response teams from the Singapore Red Cross to the Philippines.

9. SingTel is working with its Philippine associate, Globe Telecom to provide 150 satellite phones to help people stay connected.

10. 40 staff from CapitaLand's serviced residence unit, The Ascott, have been volunteering in the Philippines since Monday to help pack relief goods.
