The Prime Minister’s Office has announced changes to the Cabinet and other political appointments. This includes the promotion of several office holders and the appointment of two new office holders. Below is a summary of the changes in numbers:
1) More female representation: There is a total 6 female office-holders.
i) Minister Grace Fu Hai Yien
ii) Senior Minister of State Indranee Rajah
iii) Senior Minister of State Amy Khor
iv) Senior Minister of State Josephine Teo
v) Minister of State Sim Ann
vi) Parliamentary Secretary Low Yen Ling
2) Three female office-holders were promoted
i) Minister of State for Health and Manpower Amy Khor was promoted to Senior Minister of State
ii) Minister of State for Finance and Transport Josephine Teo was promoted to Senior Minister of State
iii) Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Communications and Information Sim Ann was promoted to Minister of State.
3) Minister Chan Chun Sing
i) At 44 years old, he is the youngest Minister in the Cabinet. The previous youngest Minister was Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, who was made Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports at the age of 44 years old.
ii) Minister Chan is one of the fastest-rising politicians in recent history, as he was promoted to Minister within 2 years. In comparison, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong entered politics in 1984 and was confirmed as full Minister for Trade and Industry in 1987. Ex-Minister George Yeo entered politics in 1988 and was promoted to Minister for Information and the Arts in 1991.
4) Cabinet and Political Office-holders
i) There are 16 full Ministers and 2 Acting Ministers in the Cabinet
ii) There are a total of 32 political office-holders.
iii) This is the 3rd round of Cabinet changes PM made after General Elections 2011.
5) Business China CEOs
Chua Chu Kang GRC MP Low Yen Ling is the 3rd Business China CEO to be appointed as an office-holder. Senior Minister of State Josephine Teo and Senior Parliamentary Secretary Sam Tan were former Business China CEOs.
