According to Google, this year Singaporeans were dying to find out about...

And people in Singapore wants to know more about PM Lee's sister than PM Lee.

If in 2014 we were preoccupied with looking up people we loved to bash, 2015 proved to be different for Singaporeans, with PSI, Lee Kuan Yew, and SEA Games dominating the top three Google searches.

Well okay, maybe not entirely true, considering how teen blogger “Amos Yee” made it into Google’s annual Year in Search for Singapore.

Every year, Google compiles a list through an analysis of more than one trillion search queries it receives, which helps to highlight the top trends of the year and show what have been our foremost concerns.

This time round we became a rather introspective bunch, asking our favourite search engine about people and events far closer to home.

Sabah Earthquake > SG50 or GE2015

It is perhaps surprising that in the year of SG50 and GE2015, these two landmark events were out-searched by a collective moment of grief that wasn't the passing of LKY (Sabah earthquake incident—see here, here and here), our sporting scene (SEA Games) and the one thing that allowed us to indulge in our favourite pastime of complaining (the haze, of course).

In fact, “PSI Singapore” leapt up five positions from last year to bag the top spot under not just one but two categories. It also emerged as runner-up to MERS under the Trending “What is...” category:

10. Hari Raya Haji

Curiously enough, coming in at 10th is the question of what Hari Raya Haji is.

Perhaps more than just customarily wishing our Muslim friends a happy Hari Raya Adilfitri, the politicians would do just as well to educate Singaporeans on the history and cultural significance of both Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Haji.
