Heartbroken kids' art pieces taken off because they were hung 'exhibition style' on walls

What?

In a Facebook note on Nov. 29 by Gallery & Co -- the cafe that was housing the art exhibition When Renndom Met Airany by two talented but now heartbroken kids -- the reason why the drawings were taken down is because they were, erm, hung "exhibition style".

is with much regret and sadness that we have to announce the closing of “When Renndom Met Airany” as of yesterday....

According to the cafe, the National Gallery of Singapore (NGS) approved the content and concept behind the exhibition but the cafe didn't clear the format of presentation of the paintings -- which were hung "exhibition style" on the walls -- with the Gallery.

"To explain a bit more, the Gallery has a sound policy that no art exhibitions can be launched in its premises which are not curated or approved by them. While the content and concept behind "When Renndom Met Airany" resonated with them and was approved, the format of presentation - with art hung "exhibition style" on the walls - was not cleared with them - a fatal error on & Co.'s part, and as such, the showcase was found to have crossed certain boundaries and was disallowed."

An art exhibition cannot be hung "exhibition style". Hmm...

We believe this explanation deserves a uniquely Singapore catchphrase.

catch-no-ball

Anyway, the cafe apologised and took full responsibility for the episode. Perhaps, it's time that NGS said something too. The Gallery, however, offered a possible alternative format that wasn't elaborated.

"We would like to add that the Gallery did offer a possible alternative format for the WRMA showcase which was not found to be acceptable for considered reasons."

When Renndom Met Airany A Visual Duologue by Renn and Aira Lim was supposed to run from Nov. 24 to Jan. 24, 2016 at Gallery and Co at NGS.

The exhibition is about the kids growing up together, never separated even for a day and how they inspire one another in their art and lives.

Initially, they were told to cut down the number of art pieces from 19 to four.
