Crowdfunding donation target smashed in 7 hours: More than S$11,700 raised for elderly man conned of life savings

People of the Internet, you have done it again.

In less than seven hours after the start of the fundraising campaign, more than s$11,700 (US$9,386) has been raised for a 70-year-old man, who was cheated out of his life savings and into handing over his $2,000 monthly pay check from working two jobs to two con women in the last 15 years.

His story of mind-numbingly wicked proportions was broken by The New Paper on Feb. 8, 2015.

This crowdfunding campaign completely shatters the record set previously in late 2014, where some S$15,542 (US$12,431) was raised in total over a month for a Vietnamese tourist who was scammed at Sim Lim Square and seen begging on his knees for his money back.

Donations started trickling in for the current campaign for Tan Soy Klang after Mothership.sg reported about the incident and the crowdfunding effort to right the wrong.

But the funds really accelerated after the trolls-with-a-heart, SMRT Ltd (Feedback), shared the word and it really struck a nerve:

Singaporeans, and plenty others around the world who read the news and acted on it, you deserve to give yourselves a pat on the back.

If there is one thing the citizens of the Internet prove they can do exceedingly well -- besides the trolling and lulz -- it is being moved to give money when they see injustice has occurred.
