High society magazine S'pore Tatler excludes top female politicians in their Who's who list

No Halimah Yacob, no Grace Fu and no Sylvia Lim.

Singapore's Top 300 by high society magazine Singapore Tatler reminds you of Mediacorp's annual Star Awards.

Everyone's a winner because no one worth his or her salt will be omitted. Everyone gets a certificate of participation in this beauty contest.

Such awards attempt to recognise one's achievements by being as politically-correct and ego-tripping as possible.

Hence, it beggars belief that Tatler is so un-PC this year.

2015's Top 300, which features 300 politicians, captains of industry, lifestyle leaders and socialites in Singapore, has no room for women politicians such as:

Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob

Minister Grace Fu

Of course, none of these female politicians will lose any sleep over her exclusion from Tatler.

But if Tatler wants to showcase itself as the go-to-magazine for such a "definitive list", they should ensure that it is as inclusive as possible.

There were 56 personalities featured as the Who's Who of Singapore's community, social and political sphere.

The 56 included:

1. The three Prime Ministers of Singapore.

2. All the Cabinet Ministers (but Minister Grace Fu).

3. All the leaders of the three branches of government - PM, Chief Justice, President (but Speaker Halimah Yacob)

4. Only one female MP - Mayor Low Yen Ling (No room for our first female opposition MP Sylvia Lim, or Senior Ministers of State Indranee Rajah and Josephine Teo).

The important role of social stalwarts in high society

However, Tatler reserved 41 spaces for the "social stalwarts" of Singapore.

Who are these social stalwarts? Tatler described them as "familiar faces on the social scene" who "championed charity causes, brought life to parties and organised or thrown scintillating soirees and events".

Tatler's selection criteria for the Who's Who in Singapore is clear.

When you only have 300 "awards" to give, it is more important to reward your loyal female socialite readers than the true female leaders of the land.
