Tripping up at MRT stations is now such a major concern that SMRT will run escalator safety announcements.

An average of 15 tripping incidents are reported monthly. The main reason? Commuters are too engrossed with their mobile devices.

To curb this truly first world problem, SMRT announced that it will run announcements telling people to mind their step and hold on to the handrails. These announcements will be aired at 10 stations such as uber-crowded City Hall, Jurong East and Tanjong Pagar station.

This initiative is part of four SMRT pilot measures, which include Care Zones for passengers with special needs to stand in and two feedback systems using Whatsapp and tablets.

Hang on. if commuters are glued to their devices, chances are, they are most likely to be plugged in too.

But nice try, SMRT.
