The Singapore Tourism Board has revamped YourSingapore, a website that caters to tourists who want to find out more about what they can do when they are marooned on this tiny island set in the sea.
Barely a week old, the revamped site is still in the midst of getting feedback from users. A full version of the website will be launched at the end of the year.
The last time YourSingapore was tweaked was in 2010. It used to contain listings but it now has 400 articles from various bloggers and other local websites specialising in everything and nothing in particular about Singapore.
Regardless, here are 6 odd informative facts that tourists to Singapore cannot find in YourSingapore:
1. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has Tom Cruise teeth
What does Tom Cruise teeth mean? Well, it's something that once seen, can't be unseen.
Yup, he does not have two front teeth.
He has one front tooth.
Here's PM Lee:
Oh hello, Tom Cruise teeth.
You're welcome.
2. Singapore $5 notes feel different in texture compared to other notes
Why is it special? Take out a $2, $5 and $10 plastic note. Feel them. You'll realise that the $5 note is printed on a different kind of plastic material.
If you asked hawkers or money changers or anyone who has to handle notes regularly, they will attest to how difficult it is to count $5 bills.
Apparently, because of $5 notes' texture, they just feel different on your fingertips.
3. Special surprise on the Northeast Line from Clarke Quay to Chinatown
When travelling from Clark Quay to Chinatown station on the purple North East MRT Line (but not in the opposite direction), you will experience a sudden jolt.
There perhaps is a kink in the track or a more pronounced turn that the train has to navigate around.
If you're seated, sit back and watch people get caught out unawares as they experience centre-of-gravity altering jerk.
4. Singapore is not in its true time zone
Singapore is actually 6 hours and 55 minutes ahead of GMT, rather than the widely accepted 8 hours ahead of GMT.
According to this site, "sometime in 1981, Malaysia declared that West Malaysia would move their clocks ahead by 30 min to match the time in use in East Malaysia (8 hrs ahead of GMT). This meant that Singapore would be in a rather awkward position in time if she didn't follow suit, especially with the amount of traffic and trade across the causeway. Singapore Government Gazette Notification S 392/81 (dated 31 December 1981) notified the nation that as of 1st Jan 1982, Singapore Standard Time would be 8 hours ahead of GMT."
5. Ex-president SR Nathan's full name is Sellapan Ramanathan
Singapore's sixth president, who is best known as the regular stroller at East Coast Park as well as hostage negotiator, has a real name called "Sellapan Ramanathan".
Hardly a presidential name as it barely rolls off the tongue.
6. Locations of unofficial red light districts
We googled 'Orchard Towers' and this was one of the first few photographs that appeared.
Aside from Geylang, there are many "colourful" locations in Singapore.
Orchard Towers, Joo Chiat, Balestier Road, Chinatown, Changi Village, Selegie, and Bugis are other places where things get a bit exciting.
Oh there's the Internet as well, of course.
