The hits and misses of 2013

Did your favourites make it into this list?

1. Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke ft. Pharrell Williams and T.I

It’s one of those songs that you can’t help but jam out to and then feel really guilty about it when you remember how misogynistic the lyrics are.

(Also, if you found the brunette from the music video hot, you’re in for a treat. Actress-model Emily Ratajkowski is going to star next to Ben Affleck in a movie called Gone Girl that is set to be released next year.)

2. We Can't Stop - Miley Cyrus

Remember how we clutched our pearls when Miley debuted her new look and her odd (understatement) music video for We Can’t Stop featuring way too much of her tongue and other strange shots? The backlash against Miley just escalated after her performance at the VMAs.

3. Royals – Lorde

She’s probably the breakthrough artiste in every country’s radio charts. This time last year, this New Zealander was just a small-town girl but look at her today.

4. Radioactive – Imagine Dragons

"> " height="315" width="560" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0">

This is another breakthrough band this year. With a smooth blend of the alternative and rock genre, this song, as well as their other singles like Demons and It’s Time, had everyone tapping their feet.

5. Gentleman - PSY

Riding on his success all over the charts with the annoyingly infectious Gangnam Style, PSY released an equally addictive earworm called Gentleman this year.

6. Thrift Shop – Macklemore ft. Ryan Lewis

"> " height="315" width="560" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0">

What what what what what what what what. Admit it, you sang that to the tune of the first verse in the song. Who knew a song about not having enough money to buy expensive threads would become so popular?

7. Just Give Me a Reason - Pink ft. Nat Ruess

"> " height="315" width="560" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0">

This started off as the perfect song to listen to and belt out while you were going through a rough patch in your relationship. Then the airwaves started playing it every 30 minutes and it quickly became the song you’d pay to not listen to again.

8. When I Was Your Man - Bruno Mars

What do you mean if I’m crying while listening to this song?

But in all seriousness, it’s a great ballad.

9. Clarity – Zedd ft. Foxes

Here’s yet another artiste that hit us out of nowhere with this catchy tune. Hopefully, they’ll release more singles in 2014.

9. Wake Me Up - Avicii

"> " height="315" width="560" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0">

There’s something about this song, right from the banjos in the opening bit that just makes you want to bop to the tune. No night at Zouk this year was complete without some rendition of this song by the DJ.

10. Don’t You Worry Child – Swedish House Mafia

"> " height="315" width="560" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0">

This song dominated the playlists at clubs. Strangely, it was also a very comforting song (maybe it’s just me).

11. I Love It – Icona Pop ft. Charli XCX

"> " height="315" width="560" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0">

Someone insulted your outfit? “I don’t care, I love it.” Someone dissed your favourite band? “I don’t care, I love it.” This entire song should have been your mantra for the year.

12. I Knew You Were Trouble. – Taylor Swift

"> " height="315" width="560" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0">

Let’s not forget this song. It was not really Taylor Swift’s version that was iconic this year. To me, personally, the goat’s version was miles better.

13. Best Song Ever – One Direction

"> " height="315" width="560" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0">

Even if you hate the song because of its shallow lyrics, just picture the faces of the band members and all will be fine.

14. Get Lucky – Daft Punk ft. Pharrell William

"> " height="315" width="560" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0">

Daft Punk really do know how to make an amazing comeback.

15. One Singapore – NDP Theme Song 2013

"> " height="315" width="560" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0">

Whoa-whoa-oh-oh. Whoa-whoa-oh-oh-oh. Our year would not have been complete without our NDP song for this year. We were truly “One Singapore” as we bonded over how much we hated the song.

Were you impressed with what 2013 had to offer in terms of song choices? What sort of tunes are you hoping to hear more of in 2014?

These songs too new for you? Prefer some old nostalgic song from the 90s instead?
