But not all Singaporeans prove that they can be better than that on social media.
After news broke that a riot had broken out at Little India on Sunday night, a wave of anti-foreigner vitriol swept through the social media scene, particularly on Facebook and Twitter.
Riding on the trending hashtag #LittleIndiaRiot, the tweets and Facebook posts descended into racism quickly.
However, what was heartening was the sane appeals for calm from another quarter pushing back against the hate.
Here are their responses:
I dont get what does the riot got to do with SR Nathan -.- Not like Tony Tan ask the bangalas to start the riot #LittleIndiaRiot

Tonight's riot has to do with the foolishness of men, not the colour of their skin or the country they're born in. #LittleIndiaRiot

Please... Please refrain from making any ridiculous, insensitive, racial and xenophobic remarks. #littleindiariot

How you can help #littleindiariot - pass on useful info, make sure people are safe, and do not make stupid xenophobic remarks.

Come now, the #LittleIndiaRiot is a scary incident but let's stay calm and keep the xenophobia out of this. I hope nobody is hurt.

Screw all the racist remarks.. Can't believe that I'm reading all these from Singaporeans.. So much for education! #LittleIndiaRiot

Get well soon to the 10 injured policemen. #LittleIndiaRiot

It's ironic how racist tweets inevitably start with 'not to sound racist but..' Lives have been lost. Have some decency. #LittleIndiaRiot

I'm seeing the racial slurs & sneaky attacks already online. Hold back on the bile. We are better than this! #littleindia #riots
