The Fare Review Mechanism Committee report is out and the Workers' Party (WP) MP Lee Li Lian has got both her wishes fulfilled.
Her calls for concession for the disabled community and polytechnic students have yielded results.
In a Facebook post earlier this week, she highlighted the two groups who deserve concessions:
At the Budget (Committee of Supply) 2013 debates this year, Lee said that it "was an opportune time to review the need for concessionary travel to be extended for the physically disabled as well as for polytechnic students."
She added that the disabled community has been calling for concessions for over 13 years to no avail.
Members from both parties (Christopher de Souza, Jessica Tan, and Muhamad Faisal Manap) had raised these issues during the Budget Debate.
WP also released its statement on the report. They welcomed most of the Committee's recommendations on the concessionary fares and passes.
However, WP argued that public transport should be provided as a not for profit entity and said that it
"should not be the Government’s responsibility to safeguard the profits of SMRT and SBS Transit".
