The biggest news today is that the Singapore government has arrested up to six people for allegedly defacing several websites over the last few weeks and charging one of them in court.
A curious fact we observed: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong made a determined vow to hunt down hacktivist collective Anonymous on Nov. 6 -- when the police already had a suspected arrested and in custody on Nov. 4.
The big question: Is that the reason PM Lee sounded so determined and convincing because Singapore already knew that we've got the man?
The Singapore police has issued a statement detailing the operation that led to the Singaporean suspect's arrest.
The Singapore Police and Central Narcotics Bureau, together with the Royal Malaysia Police tracked down 35-year-old James Raj in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and arrested him on Nov. 4 for outstanding drug-related offences.
He was subsequently brought back to Singapore and charged in court on Nov. 5, last Tuesday. The Court granted a one-week remand for further investigation. He had allegedly made an unauthorised accessed into a local council's website and posted an image of a Guy Fawkes mask, the international symbol of Anonymous.
So, this means that the authorities were already aware they had a suspect on hand when PM Lee made this statement with confidence last Wednesday: “If we can find him, we will bring him to justice and he will be dealt with severely.”
The other update made public today was focused on five other local men who are being held for allegedly hacking the websites of Singapore's president and prime minister.
Two of the suspects involved in the PMO hacking are brothers and have since been released on police bail. A third suspect in the PMO case is helping investigations.
The police said the cases against Raj and the two other groups of men are not related.
