Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong addressed a series of questions ranging from governance, leadership succession to Singapore's future on Channel NewsAsia's "Ask the PM" televised live forum last night.

Below are some of the forum highlights:

1. On Governance: PM Lee replied that the government had made significant progress on hot-button issues such as housing and transport.

2. On two attitudes among Singaporeans that PM Lee would like to change:

i) PM Lee urged Singaporeans to think of what they can do to solve problems, together with the government.

ii) PM Lee asked Singaporeans to pay close attention to issues affecting other countries, beyond those happening locally.

3. On work-life balance:: PM Lee said that work-life balance had trade-offs too, as competitors in Vietnam, China and India are hungry, anxious and "about to steal your lunch".

4. On leadership succession: PM Lee, who is 61 years old this year, intends to put in place a leadership team, as well as a successor, before he turns 70. He said that he was “very, very lucky” to have 20 years of apprenticeship and noted that the future prime ministers of Singapore might not have a similar privilege.

5. Qualities of the next PM: PM Lee said: “Ideally we have another Lee Kuan Yew, (but) that’s not going to happen.” He added that there was only one "Lee Kuan Yew in many, many, many, generations, in many, many countries. We’ve been blessed. We have to work with the talent which we have.”

6. Significance of Singapore's 50th anniversary in 2015: PM Lee said that Singapore have had a successful half century and that "there must be a spirit of commitment, dedication of ourselves to the next phrase and a resolution that I want to take this further". He compared Singapore's first 50 years to China and Israel's more challenging first 50 years.
