Is that guy straight? 5 signs to help configure your gaydar

And sound off your Straightdar.

"Is that guy straight?" We've asked ourselves this question at some point in our lives, whether you are 1) a straight guy wondering about your new found "bromance" or 2) a gal looking for a new BFF to hang with, or 3) simply a guy who is into other guys.

Sadly, there are no obvious signs. But here are five distinct indicators to configure your Straightdar, aiding you in determining accurately whether that guy is straight as an arrow or fabulous like a rainbow.

1. He doesn't love his social media as much

The vast majority of straight guys are anti-social and introverted, and seldom use social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

There are many social media apps catered specifically to the male gay community, such as Grindr, Jackd, Planet Romeo and Dudesnude.

But there are none for straight guys.

If your friend has any of the above apps or updates his status 7 times a day, that shouldn't be any blip on your Straightdar.

2. His fashion compliments are generic

There is a huge difference between "Hey that dress is hot!" and "I love how that dress's hemline and scooped neckline makes you look bootylicious!". Straight guys are much less attuned with dress sense and fashion, and are unable to express themselves well on the topic. Most straight guys can't tell the difference between blue and cyan, and have no idea what a neckerchief is.

3. He is not as well-groomed

Straight guys are not meticulous with their grooming. Although most straight guys nowadays tend to be more fashion-oriented and use copious amounts of hair products, a lot straight guys still find it a hassle to go the extra mile. Signs you shouldn't look out for on a straight guy? Perfectly shaped and plucked eyebrows, manicured fingernails and no wild armpit hair.

4. He knows nothing about fashion brands and cosmetics

Call it a media stereotype, but straight guys usually don't know what looks good, and don't know most of the fashion brand names and logos by heart. A well-dressed straight guy is as rare as a unicorn. If a guy can tell you what this season's colours are, chances are he was at Pink Dot 2013.

5. He doesn't have a strong gaydar

As the saying goes, it takes one to know one. Unlike a Singaporean who can tell if another person is a Singaporean by their mannerisms, straight guys have a less perceptive eye differentiating the sexual orientation of other dudes. They don't know the lingo, can't catch the telltale signs nor spot the indicators.
