Want to help Dominique Sarron Lee's family? You can donate money to support them

The money will go toward defraying the legal costs his mother has to pay for the civil suit they filed.

Angered or upset by the fact that the mother of the late Dominique Sarron Lee is legally unable to see justice done for negligence that led to the loss of her son's life?

You can now help, courtesy of first-year political science undergrad Brian Wong, who on Sunday started a fundraising campaign on Generosity.com for the late soldier's family.

Speaking to Mothership.sg, Wong said he did not want the Lees to have to "pay those responsible for their son's death out of their own pockets".

"I'm just a third party who's outraged by the injustice of the situation, and I hope people can see that you don't need to know someone personally to stand up for them when they're wronged," he said.

In less than a day, he, alongside another guy, Kyle Ganapathy, who initially had the same idea, raised more than US$1,500 (S$2,700) on his campaign page.

Wong aims to reach the S$22,000 that Lee's mother, Felicia Seah, was ordered to pay in legal costs for the suit that was thrown out by the High Court against the Singapore Armed Forces, Lee's platoon commander Captain Najib Hanuk Muhammad Jalal, and his safety officer Captain Chia Thye Siong.

He hasn't contacted her yet, though, saying he was informed Lee's family didn't want to ask for money.

If the Lee family does not want the money, it will be donated to either the Human Rights Watch, or a charity or organisation of their choice instead, said Wong.

On his campaign page, Wong wrote:

"But we cannot sit by and do nothing while waiting for this law to be changed. We must not question the integrity of the courts, for they have only done their job. It will do no good to rant and rage and try to change things with sheer brute force.

Yet there is one thing we can do, and that is to come together and offer real support to Dominique's family. No parent should have to pay for the death of their child, and we cannot stand by and let such a price be exacted from a grieving mother. We cannot overturn the ruling of the courts, and for now, we cannot change the law. But what we can do is to offer more than just lip service, and show them that we stand with them in their hour of grief and injustice."
