A press conference will be held on Friday, March 11, for him to make the announcement.
“Many of my friends and supporters have asked if l intend to contest in the forthcoming Presidential Election in 2017,” Dr Tan Cheng Bock wrote. “I owe them an answer,” adding that he will “let Singaporeans know of (his) intention” on Friday.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had said in Parliament that there will be a review of the Elected Presidency system in Singapore.
The review is to be undertaken by a Constitutional Commission chaired by Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon, which will cover the qualifying criteria for candidacy.
The last presidential election was held in Singapore in 2011, where Tan Cheng Bock narrowly lost by 7,382 votes to former People’s Action Party MP and Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan Keng Yam in a four-horse race.
Tony Tan was elected after garnering 745,693 (35.2 percent) majority of votes.
A total of 2,274,773 electors voted in 2011.
