Finally, the Parliament will have all its seats filled.
Daniel Goh of the Worker’s Party (WP) was sworn in as the third Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) at the start of Parliament sitting (Feb. 29).
Goh, a sociology professor at National University of Singapore (NUS), was the one of the four candidates in WP’s East Coast GRC team in General Election 2015. They scored 39.27%, the third best result among the losing opposition parties.
The 42-year old is the second NCMP from East Coast GRC team after Leon Perera. Goh was nominated by WP to be the NCMP after former Punggol East MP Lee Li Lian declined to take up her seat.
The debate over the motion to fill the third NCMP seat was heated in the last parliament seating on Jan. 29, with People's Action Party (PAP) supporting the motion with amendments that include the word "duckweed" and "WP supporting a 'political manoeuvre'".
This is the oath in full:
"I, Daniel Goh Pei Siong , having been declared elected as a Non Constituency Member of the Parliament of Singapore, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully discharge my duties as such to the best of my ability, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Republic of Singapore, and that I will preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore. So help me God."
It is interesting to note that the Oath as MP in Singapore Statues Online did not include "So help me God".
This phrase can be found in the concluding statements of the Oath of Office for American politicians (see President Barack Obama's oath of office during his inauguration in 2013).
In his Facebook post in the morning, Goh said that he would speak on the Women's Charter (Amendment) Bill and the NEA (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill.
