Road warriors, beware. If you think you know the roads like the back of your hand, you don't know what you don't know.
The Traffic Police (TP) announced on Tuesday (Feb. 16) that they are deploying new technology to deter and catch speedsters in action.
Ready for use islandwide anywhere within a week, this new bright orange device, called a Mobile Speed Camera (MSC), comes equipped with its own power source.
They are fully digital, which means they do not require the retrieval of film negatives, and can work 24/7, even in poor weather conditions.
The MSCs will be part of a new targeted approach to curb speeding on roads and will be deployed where motorists are known to speed, accidents happen and illegal races are held.
The TP has attributed the introduction of digital red light cameras and speed traps to a drastic drop in speeding and red-light running since the year before.
In 2014, there were 223 accidents due to red-light running. In 2015, it fell to 169.
The number of speeding-related accidents also dropped from 1,363 in 2014 to 1,197 in 2015.
About 20 digital speed traps were installed last year. Another 150 digital red-light cameras were installed on the roads by September last year.
Overall, the roads here have generally become safer, said the TP, as there has been a continuation of a downward trend in road deaths that has persisted for the last five years.
A total of 152 people died on the roads last year, down from 155 in 2014.
