Rare footage of stray dogs attacking monitor lizard exemplifies plight of wildlife in S'pore

This is perhaps not the first time strays have attacked wildlife.

Here's a situation you seldom see and would probably never encounter personally: A pack of stray dogs roaming around Singapore are posing a threat to wildlife as they are seen attacking what looks like a monitor lizard.

The video, shot by Melinda Chan, who previously recorded other intriguing videos of wildlife in Singapore (here and here), showed the hapless reptile being repeatedly mauled by three stray dogs.

Besides snapping back and making a run for it, the lizard can be seen trying to remain still to probably simulate being dead to get the feral dogs to leave it alone.

Mothership.sg spoke to Chan, who said that the video was taken on Friday, Feb. 5 morning near Hide 1d, Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve.

Chan said that she heard the dogs' loud barking in the distance and decided to check out the commotion. She said that the monitor lizard had already sustained much injuries and the dogs were continuously chasing and fiercely attacking it.

Chan added that one Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve (SBWR) staff arrived later to chase the dogs away.

However, it appears that it is not the first time that footage of three dogs killing a monitor lizard has been recorded.

Roughly one year ago, a similar video uploaded on Feb. 23, 2015, showed three dogs of the same colour but of slightly different build, successfully killing a monitor lizard at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve:
