Many of us living in the West side of Singapore would fondly remember the Fuji Ice Palace, the ice-skating rink that was housed in the venerable Jurong Entertainment Centre.
The establishment occupied the third floor of the shopping mall from 1994 to 2008. Back in the day, countless Westies spent their formative years here gawking at rink-goers, mostly because they had squandered all their money at the arcade, located just one level below.
Still don't remember it? Here are some pictures to jolt your memory.
There we go.
As it turns out, its website still exists – untouched since 2008 – and it's glorious. Designed by the relatively-unknown MINE STUDIO (don't bother clicking it, the website is chiefly a .jpg file), it is a reminder of how much Singapore has changed in the last decade. Here's our humble analysis of this early-21st-century relic:
1. Home page
*Cries* Look at that top banner. And how only 30 per cent of the page space is utilised.
2. Site copy
Ah, the 2000s. This was a time when using 'etc' on your website was an acceptable industry practice...
... as was this choice of font colour.
Fax Number? No way...
People booked lessons by downloading a form... and then what? What would you do with the form? Fax it?
3. There was a page dedicated to media coverage, too
The web was still in its infancy, so it had only nine stories.
And they were scans of newspaper stories, not links you could read online.
If it's any consolation, the rates haven't changed significantly between 2008 and now (Take that, inflation).
You can check the rates of Fuji Ice Palace's successor, The Rink, online.
The new rink is Singapore's first and only Olympic-size ice skating rink, but we know that this tacky flag-filled frigid after-school hangout will always have a place in our (mostly West-residing) hearts.
But who says our childhoods have to be dead?
To the dear people keeping Fuji Ice Palace's ancient website alive, don't ever take it down.
History will one day thank you for it.
