Istanbul is an ancient city in love with cats, where their affection for all things that go mew stems from a combination of religion, tradition and practicality.
Cats have always had a special place in Islam and were bred in large numbers in the 19th century to rid the city of vermin from the expanding sewage system.
These days, hundreds of fleece-lined houses have been erected at street corners by cat-mad Turkish residents to ensure their feline friends don't go cold at night.
Food establishments there go to the extent of collecting and sorting food scraps for cats, to ensure the four-legged furballs don't ingest anything they shouldn't have consumed.
And besides cat-themed cafes, an entire cat-related cottage industry has even sprung up as of late, with web developers creating apps to help adopt and locate users’ favorite kitties. Local filmmakers have also released a trailer for an upcoming feature film called Nine Lives on video-sharing platform Vimeo.
To top it off, local Imam Mustafa Efe started letting the cats take shelter in his mosque — naturally, therefore, winning worldwide approval.
