Singapore website All Singapore Stuff published an article on Jan. 6 titled "DO NOT EAT GREEN MUTATED SWEET POTATOES GROWN IN VIETNAM" which purported that sweet potatoes bought from Vietnam which turned green may have Agent Orange in it. The article was based off a Facebook post.

The circulation of the post had some Singaporeans proclaiming that food from Vietnam was not safe to consume.

The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) posted a Facebook post on Jan. 11 in response to the circulation of the Facebook post. It said that "“Agent Orange” is not known to cause sweet potatoes to turn green."

It further explained that the "greenish colour can be due to a natural occurrence, when the water soluble pigments in the cooked sweet potatoes are exposed to air."

It ended the post stating that "food products that do not meet our requirements are not permitted for sale in Singapore."

Agent Orange is a herbicide used by the US Army during the Vietnam War to destroy the crops, bushes, and trees of enemy combatants in Vietnam.

Exposure to Agent Orange can lead to a multitude of health problems. Children born in affected areas where Agent Orange was used are known to have cleft palate, mental disabilities, hernias, and extra fingers and toes.
